Garfield High School class plans reunion
Special to the Tribune-Star
TERRE HAUTE — The Garfield High School Class of 1943 will stage its annual lunch on June 13, in the Apple Club at the Holiday Inn on South Third Street in Terre Haute to celebrate the 65th anniversary of our graduation. All 1943 classmates are welcome, as are any Garfield alumni. We will be entertained by Brent McPike.
The Garfield Class of 1943 is one of the World War II high school classes that immediately upon graduation, the lads entered the armed forces to fight for our country in the European Theatre as well as in the Pacific. Many of the girls in the class went on to work in the war industries. After the war, everyone went their separate ways. Consequently, we did not see each other for 50 years. On July 11, 1992, many of the classmates showed up for a commemorative service at the Calvary Cemetery to honor our homeroom teacher, Grace DeVaney.
From that meeting, we decided to have annual meetings of the Class of 1943. In 1993, we began having annual reunions.
The volunteer committee was formed in 1992 and has met four times a year every year to plan the annual dinner or lunch. It has been great fun reflecting on our high school days, the total respect for our teachers, the respect of the school property, the excellent relationships with the staff and the teachers at Garfield, and the fun of traveling all the way to Brazil or Clinton for the football and basketball teams and the band.
Please feel free to join us for what will likely be our last formal get-together. For some reason or another, our mates are slowly disappearing. Please call Jean Biddle Eyster at (812) 448-3766 by June 10 to make a reservation.
